Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
