2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Reception

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined vision.

Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Below is the complete message from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. After some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Take on the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every match. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or go big, put it on the line, and pray your squad can secure victory? The option is up to you."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to more updates as development continues.
